David MacDonald was born in St. Louis, Missouri in 1983 and received a B.M. in composition and trumpet performance from the University of Missouri – Columbia in 2006. He currently studies composition with Ricardo Lorenz at Michigan State University, where he also teaches a course in music theory for non-music majors. His past composition teachers include W. Thomas McKenney and Stefan Freund, and he has studied trumpet with Richard Illman, Iskander Akhmadullin, and Stephen Bottom. In 2007, David won the Michigan State University Honors Competition for Emulsion, and in 2006, he was a winner of the 54th Annual BMI Student Composer Awards for Elegy. He received an Honorable Mention in the 2005 MTNA State-level Young Artist Composer Competition, was a 2005 finalist in the Sinquefield Family Foundation Prize in Composition, and a Semi-finalist in the 2004 National Trumpet Competition College Solo Division. His music has been performed at venues around the United States, including Carnegie's Weill Recital Hall. While studying at Missouri, he served as principal trumpet with both the MU Symphonic Wind Ensemble and the MU Philharmonic Orchestra.
